Senior Chinese leader Yu Zhengsheng on Monday urged the Islamic Association of China (IAC) to continue to make contributions to ethnic solidarity, religious harmony and social stability.

Yu, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), made the remarks while meeting with representatives of the 10th National Congress of Chinese Muslims, which was held in Beijing from Saturday to Monday.

He said that the Islamic circles of China should advocate the fine traditions of patriotism, being law-abiding, inclusiveness, and adapting itself to the socialist society of China.

Yu called on the IAC to lead Islamic clergy and believers in China to follow the country's religious policies, to increase the law-abiding awareness, and to resist and guard against religious extremism.

Yu congratulated the success of the congress and spoke highly of the work of the IAC over the past five years.

More than 370 people from across China attended the congress, which elected the new leadership of the IAC, chaired by Yang Faming, a renowned Imam from Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. Endi
