Bird flu case detected in north France: ministry

Xinhua, November 28, 2016 Adjust font size:

France reported one case of highly pathogenic bird flu in the northern region of Pas-de-Calais, the country's agriculture ministry announced Monday.

The avian influenza case was confirmed on Nov. 26 in northern commune of Marck at 20 wild ducks used as callers to hunt waterfowl, the ministry said in a statement.

All the infected wild ducks in the site and others in neighbouring Boulogne city were killed, it added.

The ministry recalled the need to respect strict precaution measures imposed earlier this month to avoid contamination mainly in "high risk zones."

The precaution plan includes the use of confinement and safety nets to prevent poultry contacts with wild birds and restrictions for hunters, notably of wild feathered game, in high risk areas.

France, the European Union main producer of famous foie gras, detected bird flu outbreak last year, forcing a ban of all duck and goose production in many southwestern departments. Endit
