Tokyo shares close higher by break on strong U.S. stocks

Tokyo shares closed higher by break Thursday morning, with the Nikkei index hitting a roughly 10-and-a-half-month high on strong U.S. stocks overnight.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average gained 175.91 points, or 0.97 percent, from Tuesday to 18,338.85. Tokyo markets were closed on Wednesday for a national holiday.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was up 11.64 points, or 0.80 percent, to 1,459.14.

Gainers were led by iron and steel, transportation equipment and rubber product issues. Endit
