Mexico City homeowners to get tax break for greening roofs

Xinhua, November 24, 2016 Adjust font size:

Mexico City homeowners will be eligible for a 10-percent cut in property taxes if they green their roofs, local lawmakers decided on Wednesday.

Mexico City's Legislative Assembly "approved a reduction in the property tax of 10 percent for residents who install green roofs or walls in their homes," Radio Formula news reported.

To be eligible for the tax break, homeowners in the capital city of Mexico must green at least "a third of the total surface area," the radio station said.

In passing the bill, lawmakers cited figures from the World Health Organization (WHO), recommending a city have 9 square meters of green areas per inhabitant, and that these areas be no more than 15 minutes away on foot, according to the station.

Mexico City and the metropolitan area, home to more than 20 million people, has only 2.3 square meters of green space per inhabitant.

Green areas are credited with cutting air pollution by, among other things, trapping suspended particles in the air. Endi
