Tanzanian PM wants vigorous measures to market tourism

Tanzanian Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa has called upon responsible authorities dealing with tourism promotion to promote tourist destinations aggressively, saying the current pace is not encouraging.
He made the remarks on Tuesday in Dodoma when he met with high-ranking officials in the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism.
Majaliwa asked the Director of Tourism Department in the ministry, Zahoro Kimwaga, together with the Tanzania Tourists Board (TTB) to be more business oriented, rather than continue with 'business as usual.'
He said more needed to be done for the country to benefit from its unique natural resources.
"Promotion of the tourism industry is still unsatisfactory, I don't see your aggressiveness in promoting what we have in different platforms. If you had done so, we could have collected more than what we have," the prime minister said.
"It is so astonishing to see major highways without advertisements that promote Tanzania's tourist potentials. Along most of our roads you find only billboards for mobile phone companies," he noted.
Majaliwa urged the responsible authorities to unveil the country's treasures in tourism to lure more people into visiting its tourist destinations such as national parks.
He also asked them to be creative by using electronic screens at major airports and road junctions to air pictures of wild animals to ensure many people know what is happening in the country's sanctuaries.
The country's tourism sector plays a significant role in the Tanzanian economy.
It is estimated that in 2014 alone, tourism generated around 2 billion U.S. dollars, which constituted 25 percent of Tanzania's foreign exchange earnings. Endit
