New Zika case detected in southern Vietnam

Xinhua, November 21, 2016 Adjust font size:

A Vietnamese woman from Vietnam's Ba Ria Vung Tau tested positive for the Zika virus on Monday, becoming the second Zika patient in the southern province.

The latest case is a 22-year-old woman from Tan Thanh district, and the first case in Ba Ria Vung Tau is her younger brother, said the provincial Health Department.

Local health agencies have disinfected the area where the sibling live, and provided medical checkups for pregnant women in the neighborhood.

The Aedes mosquito-borne and sexually transmitted Zika virus, which can cause severe birth defects, has spread to some Southeast Asian countries.

To date, Vietnam has detected 66 Zika cases, including 57 from Ho Chi Minh City, two each in Dak Lak and Binh Duong provinces, two in Ba Ria Vung Tau, and one in Khanh Hoa, Phu Yen and Long An provinces respectively. Enditem
