More than 1 mln tourists visit Bratislava in Jan-Oct

Xinhua, November 21, 2016 Adjust font size:

Tourist interest here is growing, with the one-million-visitor threshold exceeded in the first 10 months of this year, Bratislava mayor Ivo Nesrovnal announced on Monday.

"We can announce a record influx of tourists. While around one million tourists came to Bratislava in the whole of 2015, we achieved this level as early as in October this year," said Nesrovnal.

The highest number of visitors come to the Slovak capital from the Czech Republic, Germany and Austria. The number of Spanish and Russian tourists registered strong growth when compared to 2015.

Bratislava Tourist Board executive director Alzbeta Melicharova said that in the first ten months of this year the number of visitors to Bratislava increased by almost 17 percent year-on-year.

"In terms of statistics for the whole of Slovakia, Bratislava, as is traditional, makes up 24 percent of overall visits. For foreign visitors...it's 40 percent," stressed Melicharova. The average number of nights stayed by tourists in Bratislava currently amounts to 2.2.

"The figure is going up slowly, but constantly," said Melicharova.

The number of jobs in the field of tourism is growing, as is the amount of accommodation tax collected.

"Last year, we collected 3.1 million euros (3.3 million U.S. dollars) in this tax in 2015, while we garnered 2.3 million euros in the first half of this year alone. The volume of money going into the municipal budget will significantly grow thanks to this," said Nesrovnal. Endit
