EU expresses condolences to India over fatal train derailment

Xinhua, November 21, 2016 Adjust font size:

The European Union (EU) on Sunday expressed condolences to the Indian government and families of victims of a train accident which claimed at least 91 lives.

"We express our sincere condolences to the government of India and to the families and friends of the victims of today's derailment of the passenger train in Uttar Pradesh in northern India," a spokesperson of the European External Action Service (EEAS) said in a statement.

"The EU stands by the authorities and the people of India in dealing with this tragedy," added the spokesperson.

At least 91 people have been killed and more than 150 others injured after an express train derailed in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh early Sunday morning, a senior railway official said.

The Indore-Patna Express, which is the only bi-weekly train running from the central state of Madhya Pradesh to the eastern state of Bihar's capital Patna, was on its way to Patna when the accident took place. Endit
