Germany's federal states urged to employ more police officers: minister

Xinhua, November 20, 2016 Adjust font size:

Germany's interior minister on Saturday called on the country's federal states to employ more police officers, considering still "considerable challenges" facing the federal police, local media reported.

Thomas de Maiziere made the remarks while attending a local party congress of CDU, which he is affiliated to, in the northern federal state of Schleswig-Holstein.

De Maiziere has spoken of his plan that urges federal states to increase 7,500 federal police positions between 2015 and 2020.

"The federal police endured last year with a huge number of refugees, but continue facing considerable challenges," he said.

The minister appealed to federal states for cracking down together on housebreaking crime, which has worsened in recent years.

The minister also called for cooperation with other European countries, for many housebreakers come from east and southeast Europe according to analyses by German Federal Criminal Police Office. Endit
