The National Statistics Office issued the results from the annual Statistics on Income and Living Conditions (SILC) survey on Friday, revealing that during 2015, the percentage of people living in overcrowded households stood at 3.5 percent.

This survey collects information on the income and living conditions of private households. In the 2015 survey, almost 4,300 households were included.

The survey revealed that 44 percent of households resided in houses, with the remaining share living either in apartments or maisonettes.

A total of 76.5 percent of households owned their own home. The share of homeowners with dependent children stood at 85.7 percent, whilst those without dependent children stood at 71.5 percent.

However, when it comes to rented dwellings, 22.6 percent of households are renters without dependent children, compared with 9.8 percent of tenants with dependent children.

The survey revealed that in 2015, 3.5 percent of all persons living in private households lived in overcrowded households. In owned households, the overcrowding rate stood at 2.5 percent, whilst in rented dwellings this was 9.5 percent.

Overcrowding is an indicator of relative poverty, and for persons who were at risk of poverty or social exclusion, the overcrowding rate stood at 8.2 percent whereas this rate stood at 2.2 percent for the rest of the population. Endit
