Several Maltese government agencies, including those working on asylum and border control, will be benefiting from almost 19 million euros (20.13 million U.S. dollars) of funding, out of which 14 million euros will be financed by the European Union, according to a statement by the Maltese government on Friday.

In relation to the armed forces of Malta, the approved projects will involve improving the security of the ammunition and explosives storage facilities as well as the purchase of a third fixed wing maritime patrol aircraft. This third aircraft is estimated to cost over 16 million euros.

The Civil Protection Department will also benefit from this funding to update and replace hazardous material equipment and to provide training for personnel.

The remaining funds will be utilized to provide security services at the open centers for the agency for the welfare of asylum-seekers. This agency is responsible for the provision of accommodation and facilitating access by asylum-seekers to mainstream services such as free health care and free education services.

Malta's Parliamentary Secretary Ian Borg stated that further projects should be approved in the coming weeks, the focus of these being internal security and asylum, migration and integration.(1 euro = 1.06 U.S. dollars) Endit
