The 16th General Assembly of the Organization of Asia-Pacific News Agencies (OANA) wrapped up here on Friday at Absheron Marriott hotel.

Prior to the Assembly, the OANA Executive Board held its 40th session.

The assembly featured two plenary sessions and the 41st Executive Board meeting. The participants heard reports from OANA top officials, financial, technical and ethics committees. OANA members also reviewed some organizational issues.

Addressing the assembly, President of OANA, Director General of Russia's TASS News Agency Sergei Mikhaylov said that today OANA is the largest media space of the Asia-Pacific region for the direct and free information exchange. "A significant part of the world' s information flow comes from the countries that are members of our organization," Mikhaylov emphasized.

Dwelling on the problem of violence against journalists, Mikhaylov said that numerous cases of violence led to the establishment of Ethics Committee within the Organization of Asia-Pacific News Agencies.

He also presented OANA Excellence Award to Korean Yonhap agency representative Jung Tae-sung and Russia's TASS agency's editor Andrey Lebedev.

During the meeting AZERTAC took over the presidency of the Organization of Asia-Pacific News Agencies (OANA) from Russian TASS agency. AZERTAC Director General Aslan Aslanov assumed the three year presidency of OANA.

Heads of Russia's TASS news agency, China's Xinhua News Agency, Korea's Yonhap and Turkey's Anadoly Agency were elected as OANA Vice Presidents.

The organization also elected new members of the Executive Board. Heads of Iran's IRNA news agency, Bahrein's BNA, Vietnam's VNA, Lebanon's NNA, Australia' s AAP, Japan's Kyodo, India's PTI and Malaysia's Bernama agency have become members of the Board.

The 16th OANA General Assembly has brought together more than 80 delegates from 40 news agencies of the world.

The 17th General Assembly of OANA will be held in Seul (South Korea) with Korea's Yonhap news agency taking over the presidency of the Organization of Asia-Pacific News Agencies from AZERTAC for the years 2019-2022.
