Half of Albanian households' spending was on food, non-alcoholic beverage: survey

Nearly half of Albanian households' spending, or 48.7 percent, was on food and non-alcoholic beverages, Albanian statistics institute (INSTAT) announced Thursday.

According to the Household Budget Survey for 2015, which was released on Thursday and polled 7,335 Albanian households, the monthly spending was estimated to be about 70,766 leks (558.61 U.S. dollars) per household when it was assumed that every Albanian family has four persons.

According to the survey, the total amount of monthly Albanian household spending in 2015 is estimated to reach about 54 billion leks.

Regarding the per capita monthly spending in 2015, an Albanian spends on average about 18,600 leks, of which 9,100 leks were spent on food, according to INSTAT.

According to the institute, food and non-alcoholic beverages accounted for 48.7 percent of the monthly spending of Albanian households, while housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels constituted 10.3 percent of the overall household budget.

Clothing and footwear made up 4.9 percent of the overall household budget while furnishing, household equipment and routine maintenance of residence accounted for 4.8 percent, the survey showed.

Health and education respectively accounted for 3.6 percent and 2.1 percent of Albanian households' spending.

The survey also showed that the prefecture of Tirana had the highest monthly household spending at 81,710 leks. The prefectures with the lowest level of monthly spending for household are Elbasan in central Albania and Vlora in southern Albania, with 55,671 leks and 51,198 leks per month respectively. Enditem
