News Agencies World Congress wraps up in Baku

The Fifth News Agencies World Congress wrapped up here on Thursday with Azerbaijan's State News Agency, AZERTAC, assuming the three-year presidency of the News Agencies World Congress.
Participants of the Baku Congress adopted the Declaration. The declaration, in particular, stressed the importance of securing journalists' safety, recognized the commitment of international, regional and national media organizations to fundamental principles of information provision, urged media community to combat plagiarism and copyright infringement and to combine efforts to prevent the production and deliberate spread of untrue and biased information.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon sent a message to the participants of the Congress. In his message, the UN Secretary General pointed out that "freedom of expression and the media are essential to this new global roadmap for people and the planet."
He emphasized that news agencies play an extremely important role in disseminating timely, quality information.
Addressing the event, newly elected President of the News Agencies World Congress, AZERTAC Director General Aslan Aslanov thanked the Congress participants for confidence and support.
The Sixth News Agencies World Congress will be held in Sofia, Bulgaria, in 2019.
The Fifth News Agencies World Congress and the OANA General Assembly opened in Baku on Wednesday with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev attending the ceremony. The Congress has brought together almost 200 guests from 80 countries representing more than 130 leading news agencies of the world's five continents. Endit
