Latvia to develop military base in Baltic port city

The Latvian Defense Ministry on Wednesday unveiled a plan to develop a military base in the southwestern Latvian port city of Liepaja.

The plan, which the ministry intends to implement in ten years' time, includes construction of NATO-standard docks for the Alliance's warships, said defense ministry state secretary Janis Garisons.

The military base on the Baltic seacoast will be developed in the port city's Karosta neighborhood to "consolidate all military infrastructure in one place."

"This is a very time-consuming project, which will require huge financial resources, but our finances are rather limited at the moment. In ten years, we might build dock terminals, including for NATO vessels," Garisons said.

The defense official said this would not be a NATO base, but that armed forces of other NATO member states could use its infrastructure, for instance, to supply their ships in the Baltic Sea. Endit
