Danish Prime Minister Lars Loekke Rasmussen said on Wednesday that his government plans to increase spending on the military and national security.
Rasmussen made the comments shortly after he had talks with U.S. president-elect Donald Trump over the phone in the afternoon.
During the ten-minute talks, the two sides talked about issues including possible cooperation between the United States and Denmark in the fight against terrorism, according to a statement by Rasmussen.
"We had a friendly and constructive talk in which I stressed that Denmark has been a close ally of the United States for decades," said Rasmussen.
The prime minister said Denmark currently makes a substantial contribution to the fight against the Islamic State (IS) terror regimes in Syria and Iraq.
"Going forward, the government plans to increase spending on the military and national security," he said.
"We need a strong United States to lead the free world, and I am convinced the U.S. will assume that role in the future," he added. Enditem
