Estonia to stage short-notice training courses for reservists

Xinhua, November 17, 2016 Adjust font size:

The Estonian Defense Forces will hold very short notice additional training courses for reservists to increase military preparedness, local media reported on Wednesday.

A recent amendment to the National Defense Act allows the army to stage trainings at just 24 hours' notice, while currently reservists are notified of trainings at least 120 days in advance, the online local Postimees newspaper reported.

The need to check the battle readiness of Estonia's reservists at extremely short notice was due to the worsening international security situation, said the report.

"Additional trainings do not come as the result of specific events; however, it is clear Estonia is influenced by the international security environment," Kaido Sirman, deputy head of defense readiness at the Estonian defense ministry, was quoted as saying.

As additional training courses have not been held before, the ministry will initially test whether all the cogs start turning in the correct direction and at the right speed once the government announces the exercise, Sirman said. Endit
