Laos expects to welcome more foreign tourists

Xinhua, November 15, 2016 Adjust font size:

Laos is expected to see more foreign tourists in 2016 with higher revenue as the Southeast Asian country sets to earn an income of 700 million U.S. dollars.

The number of tourist arrivals to the country reached more than 4.3 million in 2015, drawing revenue of 650 million U.S. dollars, an increase of four percent compared to the previous year, reported Lao state-run news agency KPL on Tuesday.

Over the next five years, the revenue from the tourism and services sector is expected to be more than 950 million U.S. dollars a year. Laos expects to attract more than six million international tourists by 2020.

In 2015, there were 2,426 hotels and guesthouses across Laos with 44,600 rooms. The service and tourism businesses in Laos have seen tourist arrivals increase every year from 4.1 million people in 2014 to 4.3 million people in 2015, said KPL.

Mining exploration and tourism services are the main industries driving economic growth in Laos and it is a priority of the government to promote agricultural production, services and create more jobs for local people, it said. Endit
