Former local official sentenced to 16 years in prison

Xinhua, November 15, 2016 Adjust font size:

A court in China's Fujian Province on Tuesday sentenced Han Xiancong, a former senior political advisor in east China's Anhui Province, to 16 years in prison for taking bribes and abuses of power.

Han, former vice chairman of Anhui Provincial Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, will also have personal property worth one million yuan (about 146,000 U.S. dollars) and his illegal profits confiscated, according to the first-instance ruling.

Han sought profits for others in land transfers, bidding, construction, appointments and promotions from 2003 to 2014. He accepted bribes worth more than 23.3 million yuan (about 3.6 million U.S. dollars).

Han was also found to have caused damage to state property worth 222 million yuan due to his acts of favoritism, including helping enterprises obtain land use right at below market price.

According to a statement by the court, Han repented, confessed and returned his illegal gains "in an active manner"; all grounds for leniency. Endi
