The United Nations (UN) refugee agency said on Tuesday that a total of 3,044 new asylum seekers have entered Zambia from neighboring countries seeking international protection this year.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) office in Zambia said the number refers to asylum seekers having entered Zambia from the start of the year to end of September. 2,084 of them came from the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), while 768 came from Burundi, with the rest coming from other parts of Africa.
"The number of new arrivals from DRC in 2016 has increased by 130 percent as compared to 2015 arrivals," the refugee agency said in a statement released by Kelvin Shimoh, the public information assistant.
According to the statement, logistical arrangements were ongoing under the Office of the Commissioner for Refugees, in the Ministry of Home Affairs, to facilitate their relocation to Meheba Refugee Settlement in northwestern Zambia.
It added that the new arrivals were using various entry points, mainly the northern part of Zambia, to enter the country. Endit
