Ukraine welcomes Trump's victory in U.S. presidential elections

Xinhua, November 10, 2016 Adjust font size:

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and local experts on Wednesday have welcomed Donald Trump's victory in the U.S. presidential elections.

"My sincere congratulations to Donald Trump on being elected President of the United States and to the friendly American nation on the democratic expression of will," Poroshenko was quoted as saying by his press service during a meeting with U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch.

Poroshenko expressed the hope that during Trump's term, Washington will continue providing political support to Ukraine and assisting in the implementation of economic reforms.

Local experts have also greeted the choice of the U.S. people, suggesting that the election of the new president will not alter the landscape of Ukrainian-American relations.

"I am sure that the foreign policy course of the United States, a friendly country to us, will not change," said Eugene Ogarkov, an international relations expert.

He was echoed by a political analyst Vasyl Filipchuk, who said that Ukraine has a chance to maintain and develop its good ties with the U.S. during Trump's term if Kiev takes appropriate steps to stabilize the situation in the East European country.

"Trump is a player, who perfectly understands the priorities of the foreign policy, and the main task for Ukraine is to immediately change its negative image to positive," Filipchuk said.

Republican presidential nominee Trump, 70, won Tuesday's presidential election in the United States, defeating Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton. He is set to become the 45th U.S. president succeeding Barack Obama. Endit
