2nd LD Writethru: Investigators probe tram overturn which injures dozens

Xinhua, November 9, 2016 Adjust font size:

Investigators in London are looking into a tram derailment which police had described as a "serious incident" after dozens were injured.

The overturn, which happened early Wednesday, injured 40 people and initially trapped five others.

Rescuers at the scene in South London's Croydon told media that they had freed the trapped, but London Fire Brigade station said firefighters had released a number of people and two people remain trapped.

The incident, which involved a vehicle with two carriages, occurred in a tunnel, Transport for London said.

Pictures on the social media showed large numbers of emergency vehicles at the scene which had been cordoned off by police. People have reportedly seen victims being carried to ambulances on stretchers. The London air ambulance said it has several teams on site.

Investigators are looking into the cause of the incident. Local media said the derailment had occurred close to where the east-bound tram takes a sharp left turn as it starts to head north towards the stop. Endit
