EU adds Russian lawmakers from Crimea to sanctions list

The European Union on Wednesday added to a sanctions list six Russian lawmakers elected into the State Duma, Russia's lower house of parliament, from Crimea and the city of Sevastopol.

"The EU has not recognized the illegal annexation of Crimea and Sevastopol by the Russian Federation and therefore does not recognize the holding of elections in the Crimean peninsula," said an EU press release.

A total of 152 people and 37 entities are now on the EU sanctions list. Restrictive measures, which were introduced in March 2014 and will last till March 2017, include an asset freeze and a travel ban.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said Wednesday that it will take appropriate response measures to the EU move, Russia's news website Sputnik reported.

"We perceive restrictive EU measures against the residents of Crimea and Sevastopol as unwarranted collective punishment of this region's population for the free democratic expression of their will," the ministry was quoted as saying. Endi
