East Africa's heads of prosecutions mull new strategies to detect crimes

Xinhua, November 8, 2016 Adjust font size:

Heads of prosecutions from the East Africa region are due to meet in the Kenyan lakeside town of Naivasha from Wednesday to mull new strategies of detecting and investigating crimes in the region, organizers said on Tuesday.

Kenya's Director of Public Prosecutions Keriako Tobiko and President of the East African Association of Prosecutors (EAAP) said the meeting will bring together East African Directors of Public Prosecutions who will also foster cooperation on extradition and mutual legal assistance.

"EAAP aims to foster cooperation and collaboration in prevention, detection, investigation and prosecution of crimes in the region including extradition and mutual legal assistance," Tobiko said in a statement issued in Nairobi.

The EAAP draws participants from Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda and Tanzania.

The association's mandate includes promotion and facilitation of cooperation among member states, detection, investigations and prosecution of crimes in the region and offering legal assistance to member prosecuting authorities.

EAAP also facilitates exchange of suspects and convicted prisoners, faster extraditions and conducts joint training for officials of member states. Endit
