Osasuna sack coach Martin

Xinhua, November 8, 2016 Adjust font size:

Spanish Primera Liga strugglers, Osasuna have sacked coach Quique Martin in the wake of Saturday's 1-0 defeat at home to Alaves.

The result leaves the club from Pamplona second from bottom of the table with 7 points from 11 matches and without a win in front of their fans since returning to the top-flight at the end of last season.

However, the decision seems harsh, as Osasuna have arguably the weakest squad in Liga and that Martin in his second spell as coach helped saved Osasuna from relegation to the third tier of the Spanish game two seasons ago, before leading them to promotion through the play offs last season.

In a statement published on the Osasuna website, the club thanked him for his "efforts and dedication" and wished him luck in his "future professional challenges".

Assistant coach Alfredo Suarez will replace Martin on a temporary basis while "the club works on the signing of a new coach".

Martin becomes the third coach to be sacked in La Liga this season following Paco Ayestaran, who was sacked by Valencia and Paco Jemez, who was replaced by Lucas Alcaraz at Granada. Endit
