Singapore shares closed 0.69 percent higher on Tuesday, as investors continued their buying spree on expectations that Democrat Hillary Clinton will win the U.S. presidential election later in the day.
Hillary's chances of winning got a boost after the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation decided to stand by its July finding that Hillary was not guilty of criminal wrongdoing in her use of a private email server. She is seen by investors as offering greater certainty and stability.
Singapore's benchmark Straits Times Index rose 19.29 points to 2,820.24 points. Trading volume was 1.65 billion shares worth 1.15 billion Singapore dollars. Advancers outnumbered decliners 222 to 177, while 503 stocks did not move.
Among top actives, Global Logistic Properties rose 2.9 percent to 2.10 Singapore dollars. The provider of modern logistics facilities reported a 52 percent increase in second-quarter net profit to 173 million U.S. dollars from a year ago, primarily due to higher earning before interest and tax. Its revenue came in 13 percent higher at 214 million U.S. dollars mainly attributable to the completion and stabilization of development projects in China and higher management fee income.
Fraser and Neave inched up 0.5 percent to 2.13 Singapore dollars. It reported net profit of 108.1 million Singapore dollars for financial year 2016, a 82.9 percent decrease from the earnings of 632.6 million Singapore dollars in financial year 2015 due to the absence of the one-off gain such as the gain of 541.5 million Singapore dollars from the sale of its 55 percent stake in Myanmar Brewery last year. Its revenue for the year to September fell 6.7 percent to 1.98 billion Singapore dollars, on the back of the foreign exchange translation losses on the sales of soft drinks and dairy products in Malaysia.
Among the top gainers, Jardine Matheson rose 1.8 percent to 58.20 U.S. dollars, whereas SIA Engineering became one of the top losers by falling 2 percent to 3.51 Singapore dollars. (1 U.S. dollar equals to 1.39 Singapore dollars) Endit
