Lithuanian LSDP could be left with 3 ministers at new gov't

Xinhua, November 8, 2016 Adjust font size:

The Peasants and Greens Union (LVZS), the winner of Lithuania's parliamentary elections, and the Social Democratic party (LSDP) have agreed on proportions at the new government in the second round of negotiations on Monday.

Both parties agreed that LVZS is to delegate 11 ministers and the head of the cabinet, while LSDP, the leader of the current government, will propose three ministers.

The leader of LVZS Ramunas Karbauskis said there was a significant move forward during the second round of talks and there were no problems that could stop the negotiations.

"We hope the negotiations will be finished on Wednesday and the coalition agreement will be signed," Karbauskis told journalists after the second round of negotiations.

Both parties haven't revealed the ministries they are to share in the new government.

Local media reported LSDP was proposed to delegate the ministers to the ministry of social security and labor, the foreign ministry and the ministry of justice.

After the talks, LSDP held a sitting of the party's board to discuss the talks. The prime minister and the leader of the social democratic party Algirdas Butkevicius said LSDP wants one more ministry from so called "economic ministries."

"Probably, there will be talks in regards to the fourth one when proposing candidates," Butkevicius told journalists after the LSDP board's sitting.

He emphasized the party "refuses the ministry of transport and communications" amid negative public opinion towards currently the social democrats' controlled ministry. Butkevicius named the ministries of economy, environment and agriculture when asked about the "economic ministries".

Karbauskis later told news website delfi.lt "there are no chances" LSDP could get more than three ministries.

Two weeks ago, LVZS won the country's parliamentary elections, securing 56 seats at the country's 141-seat parliament and received a mandate to form the ruling coalition and the government. LSDP, the leader of the current government, came third with 17 seats. Endit
