Retail trade down 0.2 pct in eurozone in September

Xinhua, November 8, 2016 Adjust font size:

The volume of retail trade in September dropped by 0.2 percent in both the eurozone and all European Union(EU) members, compared with August, said the EU's statistical office Eurostat on Monday.

Decline in the trade of non-food products mainly caused the 0.2 percent decrease, with falls of 1.0 percent in the eurozone and 0.2 percent in the EU separately.

Fall of 0.3 percent for automotive fuels also led to the decrease in the eurozone.

Compared with September 2015, retail trade increased by 1.1 percent in the euro area in September 2016.

According to Eurostat's analysis, rises of 1.8 percent for "food, drinks and tobacco,"1.5 percent for automotive fuel and 0.4 percent for non-food products contributed to the 1.1 percent rise.

Among EU members for which data are available, the largest year-on-year rises in the retail trade volume were in Luxembourg (15.2 percent), Romania (9.7 percent) and Poland (8.6 percent). Endit
