At least 6 killed as clans clash in Kenya

Xinhua, November 7, 2016 Adjust font size:

At least six people were killed and two others injured in an inter-clan clash in the northeastern Kenyan county of Wajir late Saturday.

Wajir County Police Commander Samuel Mukinda confirmed Sunday the fighting between neighboring Jibril and Matan clans in Baghala area, and said those killed were from Matan.

Mukinda said a group of men from the Matan clan had attempted to invade the Jibril clan but were ambushed on their arrival in the area, after their plan had apparently leaked.

"They (Matan men) were ambushed and shot dead by gunmen who had been waiting. It seems the other clan knew of the planned raid," Mukinda said.

He said police were investigating the incident with the aim of confiscating weapons from those armed.

Mukinda said more police officers had been deployed in the area, as tension remained high in the area with fears of retaliation from Matan.

The clans have fought in the past over boundaries despite peace efforts by clan leaders. Endit
