Kenyan champ Mukono seeks World Cross Country victory

Former African junior 5000m champion Moses Mukono is hopeful his injury crisis is over him as he seeks to rekindle his career starting with a performance at the World Cross Country Championships in Kampala, Uganda in March 2017.

Mukono, 21, has high potential to become the next big name in the distance races, but injury has curtailed his cruise. However, Mukono is alive to the fact that to make the Kenya team, he needs to be at his best level.

"It is always an honour to compete for the national team. There are a lot of people who have the potential to compete on the world stage and all I can wish is to let my legs prove the talking in the cross country season, which starts in December," he said on Sunday.

The former Africa Junior champion, hopes he will have the strength to elbow out his opponents and claim the ticket to Kampala next year.

"It has been a tough year but I am now back. My training for the last few months has been phenomenal and I am looking forward to running in my first competitive race. My initial target is running in the local cross country series with an aim of completing at world cross country championships in March next year," he said.

Depending on his performance in Kampala, Mukono is hopeful he will also make the Kenya team to the London World Championships in August.

"They will be the biggest competition and they are still ten months away. It is hard to say precisely what to expect, but with cross country and Diamond League, there is all that is required to test my strength," he said. Endit
