A French soldier died in a mine explosion Friday afternoon in north Mali, said the French presidency in a statement Saturday.

The serviceman, a non-commissioned officer of 515th Transport Regiment in Braconne, was wounded by the explosion at the passage of his armored vehicle in the operation, said the statement.

The Elysee "salutes the sacrifice of this French soldier killed in fulfilling his mission to defend our country and protect our citizens."

The presidency also "extends its condolences to his family and loved ones, and ensures the full solidarity of the nation in these painful circumstances."
