Uganda's oldest university closed over student strike

Uganda's oldest and top university, Makerere University, was on Tuesday closed following a demonstration by the students over a resolution by teaching staff to continue their sit-down strike.

The country's President Yoweri Museveni ordered for the closure of the university.

"I have this evening ordered for immediate closure of Makerere University until further notice to guarantee safety of persons and property," Museveni said in a letter sent to media organizations.

Earlier in the day the police and students were involved in running battles. Police used tear gas to disperse the rowdy students.

The students want lectures to resume but their lecturers on Monday resolved not to continue teaching until they are paid all the incentive arrears.

The university has had a spate of student demonstrations sparked by lecturers not turning up in class as a result of failure by the university administration to pay their arrears. Enditem
