UN agency concerned at food security in Myanmar's Rakhine State

Xinhua, October 28, 2016 Adjust font size:

The World Food Programme (WFP) said that it is concerned about the potential deterioration of food security for people affected by recent violence in Myanmar's northern Rakhine State, UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric told reporters here Thursday.

"WPF yesterday resumed its regular cash assistance for some 20,000 people in vulnerable households in the town of Buthidaung," Dujarric said at a daily news briefing here.

It is on standby to resume its regular distributions of food for 17,000 pregnant women, nursing mothers and malnourished young children in the area, he said.

"WFP is also ready to once again distribute food to an additional 50,000 people in Mangdaw Township once it becomes accessible," he added.

Myanmar government said earlier this month that it is considering the issue of recent violent attacks in Rakhine State as national concern and seeking a long-term solution, reports said.

During the attack, nine policemen were killed with five being injured and one going missing. A total of 51 assorted arms, 10,140 rounds of ammunition, one bayonet and 28 cartridges of bullets were taken by the armed men, said the reports. Endit
