One injured in tent burning in French migrant camp at Calais

Xinhua, October 26, 2016 Adjust font size:

One person was slightly injured due to gas-bottle explosions overnight after migrants set ablaze their shelters before leaving a refugee camp at Calais in northern France, said officials Wednesday.

A young Syrian migrant was wounded in his inner ear by the explosions and had been taken to hospital, said officials.

It's a tradition among communities to set fire to their homes before leaving.

On Monday, France started to clear the migrant camp in the port city where thousands of people fleeing war and poverty have been living for 18 months in difficult condition.

The French government pledged that 9,000 places will be made available at 460 "reception and orientation centers" for refugees. They will be dispersed into groups of 40 to 50 people for a limited period between three and four months.

The migrants who fit the asylum criteria will stay in France while those who do not will be repatriated. Endi
