Man receives jail term for threatening prime minister's family in Finland

Xinhua, October 26, 2016 Adjust font size:

A mentally disordered Finnish man was sentenced to 70 days in prison for making threatening phone call to Finnish Prime Minister Juha Sipila's family, local media reported on Tuesday.

The 40-year-old defendant was accused of illegal threatening, defamation and drug-related crimes, said Finnish daily Iltalehti.

Sipila's wife Minna-Maaria Sipila told the Southwest Finland District Court that she received a call from an unknown number on February 3, when his husband was on a trip abroad.

The offender aggressively berated the prime minister's immigration policy and said he should therefore be killed.

The man threatened he would come to Sipila's home with a number of fellows to rape the wife and kill the children as the prime minister himself was closely guarded.

Besides, the accused also threatened the Green League's MPs Emma Karia and Ozan Yanaria and their families.

The man was charged with drug related offenses, as several cannabis plants were found in his apartment.

Although the prosecutor demanded a tougher judgment, the district court imposed a lenient sentence on the defendant, as it was found that he suffered from a mental disorder and was unable to understand the nature of his acts and the consequences. Endit
