1st LD Writethru: 11 feared dead as gold mine collapses in western Indonesia

Xinhua, October 25, 2016 Adjust font size:

A gold mine has collapsed in Jambi province of western Indonesia, leaving 11 gold miners buried in a depth of around 50 meters, local disaster management agency said on Tuesday.

Heavy downpours triggered the incident at the mine located in Simpang Parit village of Marangin district at about 13:30 local time Monday, said Dalmanto, senior official at provincial disaster management agency.

"Evacuation could not be immediately carried out as the access to the scene is hampered by a river which waters overflow its bank," he told Xinhua via phone from the province.

"The 11 miners have been buried since yesterday (Monday) in a depth of 50 meters, how could they survive?" Dalmato stressed.

Search and rescue for the victims is underway now, but they can't use any heavy machinery in the rescue operations as there was no road to reach the spot, Dalmanto added. Endit
