Morocco, Rwanda leaders vow to establish strong partnership

Xinhua, October 24, 2016 Adjust font size:

The leaders of Morocco and Rwanda have vowed to work for the establishment of a strong partnership, Moroccan media reported on Monday.

Moroccan King Mohammed VI and president of the Republic of Rwanda, Paul Kagame, "reaffirmed their determination to work for the establishment of a strong partnership based on South-South cooperation," said a joint statement carried by the Moroccan daily Le Matin.

The statement was issued at the conclusion on Sunday of the Moroccan king's visit to Rwanda.

The two leaders praised the strong impetus in bilateral ties, agreeing on concrete actions to promote cooperation, the statement said.

"The two leaders gave their high instructions for the establishment of a substantial operational legal framework to give structure to a successful collaboration between the two governments and both countries' private operators," it said.

A total of 23 agreements were signed during the visit, representing a significant step toward achieving the goals set by the two heads of state and giving a qualitative impetus to bilateral relations, the statement said.

According to the Moroccan daily, the official visit crowns a positive development of bilateral relations in recent years, marked particularly by the visit of President Paul Kagame to Casablanca last June.

It illustrates the convergence of the visions of the two leaders to strengthen ties of friendship between the two countries and promote regional integration and the African continent's development, it added.

The king's visit "expressed the will of the Kingdom of Morocco... to further open up to East Africa, diversify its partnerships in the continent and broaden in this region the model of South-South cooperation that the kingdom has developed with its traditional partners on the continent," the paper said.

Regarding Morocco's bid to rejoin the African Union, the Rwandan president reiterated his country's support, promising "to work for its success."

After his visit to Rwanda, King Mohammed VI arrived Sunday in Dar es Salaam for an official visit to Tanzania, the second stage of his tour that will also take him to Ethiopia. Endit
