At least one person has been killed and more than three others injured in a firecracker explosion at a private tutorial in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu Friday, a senior police official said.

"The incident took place in the state's Coimbatore city when boxes of fireworks burst into flames at a private tutorial that coaches graduate students for competitive examinations. While one student was killed, the injured have been admitted to a local hospital," he said, on condition of anonymity.

However, 200 other students had a close shave as they managed to get out of the tutorial centre at the right time, the official said.

A probe has been ordered into the incident, he added.

The firecracker mishap came a day after eight people were killed and more than 10 others injured in a major fire at one of India's huge cracker manufacturing hubs in the same southern state.

The fire broke out at Sivakasi, known as the country's fireworks capital and is some 500 kms from state capital Chennai, during offloading of a big consignment of crackers from a vehicle to a shop. Endit
