EU mulls budget support for Fiji

Xinhua, October 21, 2016 Adjust font size:

The European Union (EU) plans to inject millions of dollars for sugar support directly into Fiji's annual budget, the government-run Fiji Broadcasting Corporation (FBC) said on Friday.

If successful, this will mean the EU will continue to financially support Fiji's key sectors such as the sugar industry by increasing the budgetary allowance, said the FBC.

Andrew Jacobs, EU ambassador to Fiji, said the budget support program will change the approach to the sugar industry in Fiji.

"We are now moving onto budget support which means that the European Union funds will be channeled directly into the government's budget - there are certain conditions we have to work together to meet before we can finalize the budget support program," Jacobs said.

The EU has funded specific projects and provided technical assistance and equipment to Fiji.

The EU is switching to budget support because it is considered to be the most effective and efficient way to provide development assistance, he said. Endit
