Tokyo shares open higher on EU stimulus expectation

Tokyo shares opened higher Friday after European Central Bank (ECB) President Mario Draghi signaled an extension of the ECB's quantitative easing program.

As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average rose 43.14 points, or 0.25 percent, from Thursday to 17,278.64.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was up 0.88 point, or 0.06 percent, to 1,371.68.

Gainers were led by banking, real estate and air transportation issues. Endit
