Nikkei hits roughly 6-month high following U.S. presidential debate

Tokyo shares closed higher Thursday, with the Nikkei index ending at a roughly six-month high, as market confidence was boosted following the final U.S. presidential debate with Hillary Clinton leading in polls.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average ended up 236.59 points, or 1.39 percent, from Wednesday at 17,235.50, its highest close since April 27.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange finished 13.60 points, or 1.0 percent, higher at 1,370.80.

Gainers were led by real estate, brokerage, and banking issues.

The day's turnover was around 2,825.0 billion yen (27.27 billion U.S. dollars). Endit
