Chinese envoy appeals UN to unite countries' will in face of global challenges

Xinhua, October 20, 2016 Adjust font size:

A Chinese envoy Wednesday called on the United Nations to bring together the political will of countries in addressing global challenges.

In face of such difficult questions as climate change, refugee and migrant issues, public health and security, the international community must cooperate, said Chinese Ambassador to the UN Liu Jieyi.

"It should help relevant countries to improve their capacity in those fields and protecting the interests of vulnerable groups," he added.

Liu made the remarks at a General Assembly meeting with UN Secretary-General designate Antonio Guterres whose five-year term will start on Jan. 1, 2017.

Liu said China hopes the UN will make further efforts in maintaining international peace and security, promoting sustainable development as well as enhancing global partnerships.

"China has been a firm supporter, defender and participant in the UN cause," said Liu, adding that China fully supports the new secretary-general in fulfilling his responsibilities.

"We wish the UN a greater success and we wish that we would work for more just and reasonable system of global governance as well as a new type of international relationship featuring cooperation and win-win results and towards a community of shared future," he said. Endite
