Brazil to access Swiss bank accounts in Petrobras probe

A Swiss court has cleared the way for banks to send documents that may help indict Brazilian business owners and officials of wrongdoing, prosecutors said on Wednesday.

The decision to cooperate with Brazil was made on Oct. 5, after Switzerland's federal court dismissed motions to block the move, prosecutors said.

Prosecutors believe the documents will show Brazilian construction giant Odebrecht bribed top Petrobras officials to win bloated contracts, with payments being made via Swiss accounts.

Several of the suspects in the case with accounts in Switzerland had petitioned its high court to prevent the documents from being released to prosecutors.

Brazilian Judge Sergio Moro, who is leading the investigations into corruption at Petrobras, as part of the so-called Operation Carwash, said that the documents were necessary to clear up the case.

In March, the CEO of Odebrecht, Marcelo Odebrecht, was handed a 19-year prison term for bribery and other crimes. Endit
