Immigrants in Madrid end attempted breakout after 12 hours

Xinhua, October 19, 2016 Adjust font size:

Immigrants in the Aluche refugee center in Madrid on Wednesday ended an attempted breakout after 12 hours, local media reported.

A group of immigrants attempted to escape from a detention centre on Tuesday night, calling for liberty and dignity from its rooftop.

After 12 hours, they negotiated with the Spanish National Police and remained in the detention centre voluntarily. "They are all back in their rooms," sources from the center said.

A representative from the local government told Spanish television TVE that the centre was working as usual on Wednesday morning.

A spokesman for the Spanish National Police, Antonio Nevado, said the immigrants had no weapons and no injuries had been reported.

On Aug. 24, 17 immigrants escaped from the Aluche center, after which 10 were arrested and seven were not found. Similar events occurred in other centers in Spain.

According to Spanish newspaper El Pais, police unions have complained about the "blurry legal status of Spain's migrant holding centers, which are not technically prisons although in practice they function as such." Endit
