Bulgaria seizes nearly 24 kg of cocaine at border with Serbia

Xinhua, October 19, 2016 Adjust font size:

Bulgarian customs at the Kalotina checkpoint near the country's border with Serbia have seized 23.7 kg of cocaine, officials said Wednesday.

The illicit drug, split into 21 packages, was found on Tuesday in the driver's cab of a Turkey-registered truck entering from Serbia, the National Customs Agency (NCA) said in a press release.

The vehicle was transporting spare parts for railway cars from Germany to Turkey, NCA said.

The driver, a 37-year-old Turkish national, was arrested on the scene.

Authorities said the value of the cocaine on the black market would exceed 2.5 million U.S. dollars.

The latest move brought the total of cocaine the NCA has seized so far this year to some 30 kg, while in 2015 the total cocaine seizures amounted to 6.36 kg. Endit
