Nigerian senate to probe judges' arrest

Xinhua, October 19, 2016 Adjust font size:

The Nigerian Senate Wednesday said it will investigate the purported arrest of six judges by the country's secret police.

David Umaru, Chairman of Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, told the Chamber in Abuja, Nigeria's capital city, that it was necessary for the committee to invite the judges for clearer insight on the issue.

The Department of State Security (DSS) arrested six justices for suspected corruption in a sting operation on Oct. 8.

The National Judicial Council (NJC) on Thursday described the arrest as a threat to democracy and to the independence of the judiciary.

The NJC insisted that the arrest was an attempt to humiliate, intimidate, denigrate and cow the judiciary. Endit
