University of Namibia management, students agree on debt repayment

Xinhua, October 19, 2016 Adjust font size:

Indebted University of Namibia students have been allowed to write examinations on condition that they settle by Dec. 31 or risk having their results nullified.

The students who owe the university 145 million Namibian dollars (about 10.5 million U.S. dollars) were informed Monday that they would be barred from writing unless they pay 50 percent of their debts.

When efforts by the students representative council to negotiate with the management failed, the students staged a peaceful demonstration.

The university then postponed the examinations that had been scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday.

The students handed over a petition to vice chancellor Lazarus Hangura, who promised them that the council would decide before Thursday.

A meeting held Wednesday resolved that the students who owe the university will sit for the examinations but only after signing agreements that they will pay by Dec. 31.

Announcing the agreement, the university's pro-vice chancellor for finance and resource mobilization Ellen Namhila confirmed that those who fail to comply will have their results nullified.

Namhila also said those who do not sign the agreement will not be allowed to sit for the examinations. Endit
