Xinhua, October 19, 2016 Adjust font size:

At least 11 people were killed and unknown number injured in an attack by Al-Shabaab militants in a Somali town, 30km south of the capital Mogadishu on Tuesday.

A police officer Abdirizak Ahmed told Xinhua that five Somali police officers and six civilians were killed in the Tuesday afternoon attack when a car laden with explosives rammed into a police station in Afgoye town.

He said that Somali soldiers overpowered the militants and are now in full control of the town.

Many Al-Shabaab militants were also killed after they stormed into the police station to engage the security officers in exchange of gunfire, Ahmed said.

Witnesses told Xinhua that the militants have now left the town and the situation is now normal.

The Al-Qaida affiliated militant group, while claiming responsibility for the attack, however said that it had killed more than 35 soldiers. Enditem
