Kenyan leader calls for enhanced efforts to fight graft

Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta on Tuesday directed agencies tasked with fighting corruption to hasten their pace to help deter the vice blamed for under-development in the country.

Kenyatta defended his government, which he said has done more than all previous administrations since independence in fighting graft by sending senior government officials to court.

"Corruption should not be used for politics. Kenya must continue. As president, if there is one issue that has frustrated me, it is this issue," Kenyatta told a State House summit in Nairobi.

He challenged the different departments to play their role effectively instead of passing blame to each other.

Kenyatta said he has played his role in fighting corruption and cautioned politicians against using the issue for political gain.

He said he has even sacked six members of his cabinet on the basis of corruption claims made by the anti-graft agency.

The president also said that he would like to see the Kenyan courts putting in more efforts to deal with corruption cases. Endit
