Former French president Chirac leaves hospital

Xinhua, October 14, 2016 Adjust font size:

Former French president Jacques Chirac, who had been suffering from a lung infection, left hospital on Thursday to recover at home, his brother-in-law Frederic Salat-Baroux said.

"Chirac has left Pitie-Salpetriere hospital for his Paris home where he will continue recovering," Salat-Baroux was quoted as saying by local media.

The 83-year-old ex-head of state was taken to hospital on Sept. 18 to be treated for a lung infection. He suffered from the consequences of a cerebrovascular accident in September 2005 when he was still president.

Chirac was France's top official between 1995 and 2007. Starting his career as a high-level civil servant, the center-right lawyer was prime minister under the Socialist Party president Francois Mitterand before taking charge of the interior ministry and agriculture portfolio during president Georges Pompidou's ruling in the 1970s.

In 2003, he went against the international political mainstream after refusing to join the U.S.-led military intervention in Iraq. Endit
